AMD claim’s a saving of around 40% by allowing the GPU to both read and write frame buffer color using this lossless compressed format. Tonga’s other big change comes from lossless compression. Tonga also boasts an improved instruction set, adding native support for 16-bit floats and integer values these reduce memory bandwidth consumed and power when 32-bit values aren’t needed. Other changes include drastically increasing the number of Asynchronous Compute Engines (now the GPU features eight), and other architecture improvements which allows much better tessellation performance.

Also, a back plate with an appealing XFX logo on it would be nice, but also not a deal breaker by any means. If you need a refresher on the Tonga architecture, AMD drew a lot of inspiration from the same cores found within the R9 390 series of GPU, using the very same quad shader layout, allowing Tonga to render four primitives per clock (as opposed to just two) of their older GCN cards. I really can't take any eggs off for this as there are plenty of programs out there for the overclocker to use. The card has a max supported resolution of 2560 x 1600(DVI) and 4096 x 2160(HDMI DP).Ĭons: XFX does not offer its own overclocking utility for use with its hardware.

This card excels at cooling efficiency.Īesthetics wise, this card has a very professional look to it. I used my IR gun to check out the cooling effect of the new thermal designed fin array and Dual 90mm IP-5x fans provided. I was surprised at times as the fan speeds were extremely low even under load compared to the older R9 200's. Second, with it's XFX Ghost Thermal 3.0 technology and XFX Double Dissipation cooling, this card is one of the quieter one's I have seen in a long time. I have ran some benchmarks on my own and this card is capable of performing above R9 290 standards. Having an unlocked voltage for the AMD Antigua graphics processor core and GDDR5 memory allows you to explore this cards upper limits. This card has significant headroom to tweak around with. There were several factors weighing in on my decision to by the XFX R9 380.įirst, it came with a higher standard clock compared to other R9 380's on the market. I spent considerable time reviewing the company and its prior products (as I am sure a lot of us do anymore) and was pleased with what I had read. This card was my first experience with XFX and I was rather enthused when the package finally arrived. Pros: XFX Radeon R9 380 R9-380P-4255 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 CrossFireX Support Video Card

This is paired with a XFX 850W gold modular power supply and I have seen zero issues with driver crashes unlike the 660ti. It require less power in addition to being shorter which helps keep the case cooler. Overall Review: This replaced a 660ti 3GB card and the its much better in every category. I'm looking forward to games and programs that have support for the Vulkan (Mantle) API as well as DX12 and Freesync (need new monitor).Ĭons: The lack of HDMI 2.0 ports across the 300 series platform is my only con, but for me it's not an issue since I don't plan on any 4k gaming anyways. This should provide a perfect gaming experience for 1080p. Purchased exclusively for the 4GB frame buffer since getting 2GB would be a step back. So far gaming has shown smooth frame rates on every game 1080p. I usually don't mess with any of the overclocking features of video cards since the gains are rather minor, so buying factory overclock is preferred for me.

Even at full load the card runs cool and quiet, unlike my previous 660ti Pros: This is my third XFX Card and and each of them has been great performer, but this R9 380 4GB card stands out! It's quiet as a mouse and runs cool thanks to the Ghost Thermal 3.0 technology.
